When choosing a husband, girls are advised in "The Keepsake 1854" to pay attention to the following: If a man wipes his feet on the pavement outside the door before he enters, it is safe to assume that he will make a good domestic companion. If a man cleans the lights while cleaning them, he will prove to be a foolish householder. If a man spreads his handkerchief over his knees while drinking tea, he will prove to be a careful and wise husband. In the same way, never trust a man who refuses to take the last piece of rusk or cake, but waits for the next warm pastry. It is not unlikely that he would make a greedy and selfish husband, with whom one would not enjoy a bite at table or peace in the house at tea. The man, my dears, who wears galloises and wraps himself up carefully before venturing out into the night air, often makes a good invalid husband, who usually squats at home and lets himself be fobbed off with little. The man who guards the kettle and prevents it from spilling over will show the same care when married and will always keep an eye on the pot. The man who does not drink tea, torments the cat, snuffs, and stands with his back against the fire, is a fiend whom I advise you, my dears, by no means to choose, either for love's sake or for the sake of money. But the man who, when the tea is over, is found to have received none, will be decidedly a very good husband. Patience, like his, deserves to be rewarded by the best of wives and the best of mothers-in-law. My dear sirs, if you meet such a man, seek to marry him at all costs.
